Review of Plexus Slim: weight loss, side effects and more



Plexus Slim is a powdered weight loss supplement that is mixed with water and drink.


It is sometimes called "the pink drink" because the powder turns the water pink.


It is claimed that Plexus Slim helps you lose weight by making you feel fuller. It is also claimed to help reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels.


The recommended dose is one drink per day, which should be taken half an hour before a meal.


This article provides an objective and scientific review of Plexus Slim.


Thin plexus


Like many weight loss supplements, Plexus Slim is a mix of ingredients, all of which are said to help you lose weight.


The main ingredients in Plexus Slim are:

  • Plexus Slim Blend (Extract of green coffee bean, garcinia cambogia extract and alpha lipoic acid): 530 mg.


Plexus Slim powder comes in small packages. You are destined to use one package per drink.


Keep in mind that no scientific study has been done on Plexus Slim.


However, its four main active ingredients have been studied separately. Its manufacturer, Plexus Worldwide, says that these ingredients, when combined, have a significant effect on their weight.

Active ingredient 1: chrome


Chromium is an essential mineral that plays an important role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

Active Ingredient 2: Garcinia Cambogia Extract

Several studies in animals relate massive weight and loss of belly fat with garcinia cambogia (9, 10).


This effect can be caused by a natural substance that is found in garcinia cambogia known as hydroxycitric acid or HCA.


It is believed that HCA helps you lose weight by affecting your body's ability to store excess energy as fat. It does this by blocking an enzyme that produces fat called citrate lyase (11, 12).


Garcinia Cambogia can also reduce your appetite by increasing the levels of the hormone serotonin in your brain.


Despite the impressive weight loss observed in animals, the effects on humans have been much smaller and inconsistent (13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19).


One review noted that, for three months, the average weight lost by people taking garcinia cambogia supplements was only 2 pounds (0.88 kg) more than in those who took a placebo (12).


It is worth noting that many of the studies in this review combined garcinia cambogia with diet, which may have influenced the results.


On its own, it is unlikely that garcinia cambogia will help you lose a lot of weight.


Summary Garcinia Cambogia is promoted as a supplement to burn fat and reduce appetite. However, it has not proven to be very effective in humans.


Active ingredient 3: Green coffee bean extract


Green coffee beans are simply coffee beans that have not been roasted.


Like roasted coffee beans, green coffee beans contain some caffeine. In some studies, it has been shown that caffeine increases the metabolic rate by 3 to 11% (20, 21).


However, it is believed that the potential weight loss effects of green coffee beans come from chlorogenic acid.


Unroasted coffee beans provide significant amounts of this compound.


Chlorogenic acid can decrease the amount of carbohydrates your bowel absorbs when you eat, which leads to a lower level of blood sugar and insulin (22, 23).


In animal studies, chlorogenic acid reduced body fat and improved the function of the fat burning hormone, adiponectin (24).


Some small studies in humans also provide positive results (25).


A 12-week experiment gave 30 obese people instant regular coffee or instant coffee supplemented with chlorogenic acid. Those who drank mixed coffee lost an average of 8.2 pounds (3.7 kg) more than the others (26).


However, many of the studies on green coffee beans have been quite small and sponsored by green coffee makers (27).


In addition, a recent meta-analysis indicated that many of these studies were poorly designed and could exaggerate the potential benefits (25).


Larger and more robust studies are needed to determine if green coffee beans can help you lose weight (28).


Summary Green coffee beans have been associated with moderate weight loss in some studies. However, the current evidence in humans is weak.


Active ingredient 4: Alpha-lipoic acid


The final active ingredient in Plexus Slim is alpha lipoic acid (ALA), a fatty acid that plays an important role in energy metabolism.


It is a powerful antioxidant that can act as an aid to lose weight (29).


Your body produces all the ALA it needs. It also occurs naturally in food, so you get a small amount of what you eat.


Studies show that ALA can lower blood sugar levels and help relieve the symptoms of nerve damage in people with diabetes (30, 31, 32, 33).


The research also suggests that ALA supplements can reduce the inflammatory markers associated with insulin resistance, liver disease, cancer, heart disease and various other health conditions (34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40).


In a small 10-week study, women on a diet who also took ALA lost significantly more weight than those who followed the diet alone (41).


Other studies have found similar results (42, 43, 44, 45, 46).


However, many studies that focus on ALA and weight loss have used doses of around 300 mg per day. It is not clear how much ALA is in Plexus Slim.


At this time, most ALA studies are small and short-lived. Larger studies are needed to evaluate their effectiveness.


Summary ALA can help you lose weight in the short term, but long-term results are unknown. It is also not clear if Plexus Slim contains enough ALA to help lose weight.


Safety and side effects


No serious side effects have been reported for Plexus Slim, and it seems to be generally safe.


However, like many other dietary supplements, more research is needed on their long-term effects and safety.


Some people have reported unpleasant but not severe symptoms, such as bloating, gas, nausea, stomach pain and constipation.


Plexus Slim also contains caffeine, which can cause side effects such as headaches, dizziness, anxiety and insomnia if you take too much.
